SHANE

The Golden Voice

Jamal Shane Alicea is a black and puerto-rican native of Newark, NJ born on October 2nd.  His favorite singers while growing up in Irvington, NJ were Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, El Debarge and Babyface.  According to Shane, the first time he heard Whitney Houston's voice he fell in love and knew that he wanted to be a singer. He affectionately refers to Whitney Houston and Luther Vandross as his "parental vocal coaches" in his head whenever he practices his vocal training.  He accredits modeling his smooth crooning abilities after both celebrities.  Without any personal training, he trained his own voice and taught himself how to sing and do acrobatic vocal dynamics at the age of 12 by making the "baa-ing" sounds of sheep.  He would spend hours baa-ing fast and slow in different octaves until mastering his vocal control while singing. At the age of 14, he started humming tunes, writing songs and recording them thus creating a song database containing over 300 songs and lyrics to date.  Creating songs that are uplifting with that catchy "Pop appeal" is his specialty but he can write to all genres of music.  When it comes to the creative writing techniques that make his songs so catchy and melodic, he revealed that when he listens to a song the beat in that song talks to him in terms of creating a melody.  He uses that and draws inspiration from either his own experiences, someone else's experiences or he may make up his own scenario based on the vibe of the music.  For example, If the beat sounds angry then his formula may be to write with aggression.  If the beat sounds light and airy he would approach the song with a smooth "feel good" mindset.

Shane is no newcomer to the music industry either.  He was a member of a successful but short-lived group, S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M, created by Clivilles & Cole of the C&C Music Factory. The groups' remake of the Bill Withers standard "It's Gonna Be a Lovely Day" appeared on the multi-grammy award winning Bodyguard soundtrack starring Whitney Houston (his favorite singer), the largest grossing soundtrack of all time and became a dance hit, topping the Billboard Dance Charts in 1992 with a dance remix of the song.  After appearing on television and music video shows such as; Good Morning America, MTV's "The Grind", London's "Top of the Pops" and a successful international tour the group parted ways in 1993 and was retired from Arista records.  Subsequently he stepped away from the music industry due to feeling discouraged nevertheless, he still performed in local talent showcases and weddings as well as collaborated in the studio with various producers sporadically.

On March 8, 2011, he was announced on WBLS 107.5FM as America's Next Rising Star! He was the winner (Shane A.) of the Choice Hotels Rising Star Music Challenge in conjunction with The Steve Harvey Morning Show on WBLS 107.5.  The prize was a Home-Recording studio! This was a national songwriting contest to find America's next hit inspirational song.  The 2-minute video that was selected is "My Angel".  It is a song that was inspired by two people in Shane's life which are his mother and his belated best friend, Christian.  "I wrote this song with my mother in mind as she has always been my support system. It's also about my best friend who passed away from HIV, his was the 1st experience ending in death from the disease that hit me really hard.  In addition, I think that the overall message within the song is universal and can appeal to everyone." he admits on his video submission.  Thank you Choice Hotels & Steve Harvey!
